According to German tradition, mushrooms are placed on the Christmas tree to ensure good luck in the upcoming year. Our mushrooms are in the form of a clip-on ornament that belonged to my husband’s parents, both of whom were first-generation Americans.

My husband’s mother made homemade sauerkraut, and we have two of her kraut boards.  Each year at Christmastime we decorate the smaller kraut board (which hangs on the wall in the kitchen) with an old-fashioned Santa Claus.
