Nikki Giovanni, born this month in 1943, is an African American poet, activist and educator.  She first gained fame during the civil rights movement of the 1960s and was known then as the “Poet of the Black Revolution”.  Known not only for her poetry but also for nonfiction essays and children’s literature, she has won numerous awards including the NAACP Image Award, the Rosa L Parks Women of Courage Award, and the Langston Hughes Medal.  Her Nikki Giovanni Poetry Collection was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Giovanni has taught at several American universities and currently is a University Distinguished Professor of writing and literature at Virginia Tech.
