C.S. Lewis

Clive Staples Lewis.  My favorite writer of all time!  Born in Belfast, Ireland in 1898, C.S. Lewis is remembered as a British author, medievalist, poet, academic,  literary critic, essayist, broadcaster, lecturer, and Christian apologist.

Lewis held academic positions at both Oxford University and Cambridge University.  He was a close friend of J.R.R. Tolkien and met regularly with Tolkien and other scholars in an informal literary group known as the Inklings.  Best known for his fictional work, especially The Chronicles of Narnia which is a fantasy series written for young people and The Space Trilogy which is a science fiction trilogy for adults, Lewis also produced non-fiction Christian works, such as Mere ChristianityMiracles, and The Problem of Pain.

Lewis died in 1963.  On the 50th anniversary of his death, he was honored with a memorial stone in Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey in London.

  1. Ahhhh, love Lewis. Love his phrase “severe mercy.” And I’m probably in the minority, but I think his magnum opus is “Screwtape.” Thanks for this one, Deb. Peace, John
