No matter how sophisticated you may be, a large granite mountain cannot be denied – it speaks in silence to the very core of your being.

Stone Mountain, seen through the conference center window

Stone Mountain, located near Atlanta, GA, has been called “the largest exposed piece of granite in the world”.  However, it is composed of quartz monzonite, granodiorite, and granite.  The mountain, which is five miles in circumference at its base, is said to have formed 300-350 million years ago as a result of the upwelling of magma from the earth’s crust.

This view is through a window of the conference center where I recently attended the first of a two-part session of the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement (GLISI).  The second session will be later this month, when I hope to get more photos of the mountain.
