Song Lyric Sunday Theme: Soul – “Sweet Soul Music”

“Do you like good music
That sweet soul music”

So many songs could fit this week’s theme, but I chose a soul song about soul music.  This one also involved a lawsuit.  Recorded in 1967 by Arthur Conley, “Sweet Soul Music” was written by Conley and Otis Redding.  However, they appropriated the melody of a Sam Cooke song and were sued by Cooke’s business partner (Cooke himself having died in 1964). As a result of the lawsuit, Cooke’s name was added to the song writer credits.

“Sweet Soul Music” reached the Number Two spot in the U.S. and Number Seven in the U.K.  It is a tribute to soul music and references several artists and songs in the lyrics including “Going to a Go-Go”, by the Miracles; “Love Is a Hurtin’ Thing”, by Lou Rawls; “Hold On, I’m Comin'”, by Sam & Dave; “Mustang Sally”, by Wilson Pickett; and “Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa”, by Otis Redding.  Singer James Brown is described as “the king of them all.”

Do you like good music
That sweet soul music
Just as long as it’s swingin’
Oh yeah, oh yeah
We are here on the floor now
We’re going to a go go
Dancin’ to the music
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Spotlight on Lou Rawls, y’all
Ah don’t he look boss, y’all
Singin’ loves a hurtin’ thing, y’all
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Spotlight on Sam and Dave y’all
Ah don’t they look great y’all
Singin’ hold on I’m comin’
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Spotlight on Wilson Pickett now
That wicked picket Pickett
Singin’ Mustang Sally
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Spotlight on Otis Redding now
Singing fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa
Fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Spotlight on James Brown, y’all
He’s the king of them all, y’all
He’s the king of them all, y’all
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Do you like good music
That sweet soul music
Just as long as it’s swingin’
Oh yeah, oh yeah
