Song Lyric Sunday Theme: Listen- “Listen People”

“Listen people to what I say
I say everybody’s got to have their day

This song immediately popped into my mind when I read what the song lyric theme for this week would be.  “Listen People” was recorded in 1966 by British pop group Herman’s Hermits.  Although lead vocalist Peter Noone left the group in 1971, he has continued to play solo shows, and I heard him perform this song in, of all places, the Mishawaka High School gym in Mishawaka, Indiana some years ago. The following night he sat at a table next to us in a South Bend, Indiana restaurant.

So who wrote this song?  According to everyone in the world except one source, the song was written by English singer/songwriter Graham Gouldman.  However, that one odd source says the songwriters were Ernestine Madison, Frank Wilson, and Frank Edward Wilson. (???) I’m going with Graham Gouldman, myself.

Listen people to what I say
I say everybody’s got to have their day
And don’t you know that
Everybody’s got to love somebody sometime
Everybody’s got to win a heart
Everybody’s got to love somebody sometime
When you do, I hope you never part
I once found love, found love just like you
But then he came, he might come to you
And don’t you know that
Everybody’s got to lose somebody sometime
But everybody can part
Everybody’s got to lose somebody sometime
So take care that you don’t lose your heart
Take my advice and you’ll always find
You’ll be happy all of the time
Take my advice and you will see
You’ll be happy as you can be
Listen people to what I say
I say everybody’s got to have their day
And don’t you know that
Everybody’s got to love somebody sometime
Everybody’s got to win a heart
Everybody’s got to love somebody sometime
When you do, I hope you never part
You never part
Listen people
