Pileated Woodpeckers

Pileated woodpeckers sound like jungle birds… And they were used by cartoonist Walter Lantz as models for the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker … We see them frequently here, although I’ve only ever seen one a time. The other day, however, there were four on our old back fence. As I was inside the house and…

Trumpet Vine

My husband planted a trumpet vine by our old shed many years ago. I don’t remember ever seeing it bloom until this year. So far it has had three blooms, one after the other, with each bloom waiting to open until the previous bloom has died. Linked to Cee’s Flower of the Day.

Daylilies

“A flower does not use words to announce its arrival to the world; it just blooms.”  Matshona Dhliwayo Linked to Cee’s Flower of the Day.

Japanese spirea

Native to Japan, Korea, and China, this shrub also is called Japanese Meadowsweet. Linked to Cee’s Flower of the Day.

Another one and only

Of all the irises in our woodland garden, this was the only one that bloomed this year. Linked to Cee’s Flower of the Day.

Spring foliage

This looks like Autumn foliage, doesn’t it? Actually, it’s the late Spring foliage of the Loropetalum shrub, also known as the Chinese Fringe Flower shrub. Earlier in the season the leaves were a dark purple color, but as the flowers faded, the leaves took on more of this Autumn-like hue.

The first and only

The first, and so far the only, yellow rose of the season… Linked to Cee’s Flower of the Day.

Looking up

“Though my life is low, if my spirit looks upward habitually at an elevated angle, it is as if it were redeemed. When the desire to be better than we are is really sincere we are instantly elevated, and so far better already.” (Henry David Thoreau)

Wildflowers

“If all flowers wanted to be roses, nature would lose her springtime beauty and the fields would no longer be decked out with little wildflowers.” (Therese of Lisieux) Linked to Cee’s Flower of the Day.
